With the amount of jobseekers actively looking for employment, when you apply for your dream job – you are in competition. It is vital that you optimize your odds by appearing to be the most appropriate applicant. There are some common errors that many jobseekers will inevitably make without realising it.

When looking for a job, most people will revise their old CV and add any recent experience that may be absent. This sounds like the first thing to do when starting a job hunt, however, if you want to assert yourself as the ideal candidate, it is important to do more that just dust off an old CV. To impress employers, your CV should be adapted to each specific position you apply for.

Consider the skills and qualifications this particular position will require. By writing a CV that appeals directly to the employer’s needs and necessities, you will improve your odds of success. When reading a CV, employers will generally examine it for an about 30 seconds. If they notice something relevant to the position, eg experience or certain skills, they are more likely to read through thoroughly.

Once you have completed your CV, you should improve your chances further by writing a covering letter to be sent with it. Many people are happy to write this in a very general and impersonal way so that it can be sent out to numerous companies. Employers will most certainly be more interested in those candidates that have made a reference to the company itself, for example “I would like to work for your company because…”

Before sending your CV and covering letter, ask a few friends or relatives to read through it to check for spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. Both documents will be considered as examples of you work and should therefore be good quality.

Many positions advertised today will be open for application through the internet. This means that for many jobs, you will need to apply via email. If this is the case for your position, your email should be more than a quick note with an attachment. You should consider each email you send as an example of your writing skills and avoid using shorthand for example ‘hav’ instead of ‘have’ and ‘u’ instead of ‘you’. This will look unprofessional and employers are far less likely to even consider your application. Print out both the email and attachments before sending them and review their content. It may also be useful to send the email to a friend first to ensure that it will be received as you want it to look.

When invited to attend an interview, some are aware that it is more than just an opportunity for employers to get to know you. Employers will be more compelled to consider your application if you sound genuinely interested. When your interviewer asks whether you have any questions, always think of some to ask. Before you go along to the interview, have a list of a few questions that you would like to ask. This will not only make you look more prepared, but also more interested

Following an interview, it is a common misconception that there is nothing to do but wait to hear your interviewer’s feedback. It is never a bad idea to send a ‘Thank you’ letter or email, thanking your interviewer for the opportunity as well as his/her time. If you do not hear from your interviewer after a few days, it is a good idea to telephone. It is tempting to keep your distance to avoid ‘getting on anyone’s nerves’ but the persistent jobseeker is usually a successful one!

Starting your own consulting business can be one of the most challenging but rewarding entrepreneurial endeavors an individual can embark on. If you have a great deal of expertise in your field and your skills are highly sought after, then you might have what it takes to go independent and really start earning what you are worth. Some consultants may be surprised to discover how much their employer is billing the end clients for their hours, and seek to capture 100% of those hourly rates. However, a career in consulting is not ideal for everyone. As with any important decision, conduct as much research as possible before making up your mind.

The advantages to becoming an independent consultant are numerous, and the right preparation can help to ensure the early success of a consulting business. Financial backing is, of course, crucial. Whether it is a robust savings account or the support of a financial patron, it is vital to have a strong foundation financially. In many cases, an independent consultant will also need to be able to pay for their own medical benefits, disability insurance, general liability business insurance and professional liability insurance at high individual rates; unless an umbrella company or employer of record is utilized to secure group rates. You’ll also need to research what to charge for your hourly or project based billing rates. The right rate needs to cover you for the additional overhead of being in business for yourself, while still remaining competitive in the marketplace.

In order to achieve success working independently, an individual must be well organized and self-motivated. For many, having the freedom to define your hours, at least to some degree, is incentive enough to start a consulting business. Still, there are several aspects to consider before setting out on your own. Managing one’s self can prove difficult for some. Without proper planning, scheduling and organizing can be a challenge. There is the financial aspect to starting a consulting business as well. Finding jobs for yourself can be a grueling process that can test your confidence and your bank account simultaneously. To succeed as an independent consultant you will need to be able to handle the pressures of motivating and organizing yourself. Another important aspect of successful consulting is going through the process of building your individual business. Using an Umbrella Company or an Employer of Record can also help you take care of particulars such as benefits, taxes and insurance, however they are not in the business of finding work for you - you must have your own clientele. A staffing firm is an organization which can help you find work, however the exchange is that they will typically take a high markup on your rate. Be sure to compare prices with other types of companies. An umbrella company or an employer of record may not be quite as expensive if you have the ability to line up your own assignments and clients.

Another way to structure your company is by self incorporating. In this scenario, the independent consultant is responsible for all legal and insurance needs. An alternative to self incorporating is working with an umbrella company or an employer of record. Self incorporation involves freedom and independence, but also a great deal of responsibility and administrative overhead. Beyond these structural elements, there are a few important steps that can be taken to help make a consulting business successful. It is crucial to be constantly marketing yourself. Building clientele, following up with clients and creating a professional image for yourself are all necessary if you are to find success as a consultant. It is also important to get on the vendor list. This will help you become recognized by larger corporations which provide the most lucrative consulting projects. Working with an umbrella company or an employer of record can help in this regard as well. Joining one of these organizations can be a great benefit for any consultant. Plugging yourself into a larger corporate structure can help you obtain contractor compliance and vendor qualifications that will provide an important avenue to big clients. To succeed in independent consulting one needs to be an expert in their given field. However, expertise is not always enough. Staying up to date on trends and developments can help in convincing companies that you are the individual they need to help them reach the goals they are working towards. You can also help yourself by obtaining skills that are indispensible. In order to get companies to consistently pay for your services, offer them something they cannot get anywhere else. Often, companies can save money by outsourcing. Help make their decision easier. Simply put, provide your clientele with services and expertise that makes you a necessity.

Request rates that are competitive but reasonable. This is another important aspect of individual consulting. If you offer services for too little you may have trouble convincing a company that you possess the level of professionalism they will require. Charging too much can make it difficult for you to find work.

For many, independent consulting is a rewarding profession. But be sure to prepare yourself adequately before you get into the business, though. There are clear advantages to working for yourself, and an umbrella company or an employer of record can help pave the way for your consulting career to become a success.

In every life there are landmarks, where the life shifts to another plain. The first landmark in a child’s life comes when he/she starts walking. That gives the child freedom to act on their own. Going to school is another landmark, and graduation is a bigger landmark, because one gets the freedom to go out in the world and make one’s mark in professional world. Till we become a graduate, we only think of the future. After graduating, we get the power to mould our future.

Why Graduation is an important factor?

With graduation, we get a qualification that opens many doors for us. Graduation also brings us at par with millions of other graduates and gives us the pride of being a graduate. It changes our outlook towards life and suddenly we feel that we are responsible citizens who have to make contributions to society and also take ourselves forward in life to achieve our dreams. Till few centuries ago, when there was no formal education, there were no graduates. people used to act on their own at different ages. With the advent of formal education, the society gives us indicators about the future path.

How graduation helps achieving dreams ?

All of us have a dream. Ask a small child about his dream and you will get answers such as I want to become a big man like dad, or I want to become superman, or I want to become a pilot and such things. A child looks at certain people with awe and wants to emulate them. As he/she grows up, the reality dawns that there are many more fields to show one’s strength. With graduation, a child becomes an adult. He/she has to then work their own plan and make their dream real. If the next step
after graduation goes in the right direction, the future may open immense possibilities of growth. That is how graduation helps achieving dreams. A landmark that tells you that from here onward you are on your own. Go forward and conquer the world. Make your dreams real. Become a proud citizen, and make your country proud with your actions and achievements.

There have been so many books and articles written about the office culture - topics like ‘how to stay productive at work’, ‘how to be your own boss’, and ‘stress management’ are three of the more common topics that traditionally pop up. Another topics that is being addressed as well is the whole concept of office culture. In the same way that a school has an academic curriculum and a hidden curriculum that defines the environment, student interactions and the psyche, an office also possesses a corporate culture that is defined not by an employee’s handbook but by the habits formed during office interactions. From small things such as answering the phone to bigger things like rapport between colleagues and superiors, and even the physical working environment contribute to this. Contrary to the belief that one should leave all personal baggage behind the office door and pick them up after work hours, the economics of human interaction in the office is so varied and unpredictable that personal problems can and will affect your productivity. Creating that perfect office environment has its physical as well as emotional requirements. It takes more than just littering a room with flowers and expecting that everything will be okay. Although that helps too: it has been proven that a bit of greenery in the office helps the mind relax. Which is why many modern offices set aside space for flowers and plants, have large windows for viewing the scenic panorama. More important than the physical atmosphere is the general atmosphere developed through the rapport of colleagues. A balance between working and living draws a very thin line. In truth, your colleagues at work can very well be your second family because next to your home, these are the people you spend the most time with. Discussing problems with friends at work not only de-stresses but also helps build an environment of rapport and trust. There is nothing wrong with showing that you care in times of need. A friendly gesture of a free lunch, flowers or small tokens are definitely appreciated. Employees want to feel that they are accepted and valued. They want to be well compensated. They want to know that they are safe at work. They want to feel that they are growing professionally. And when they’re burned out, they need time to recuperate - even within the office. This way, staying in the office can be more natural and enjoyable. So in effect, apart from their usual work delivery, employees need time to stop and smell the flowers in the office space. To get the most out of your employees, sometimes you need to make them work less and enjoy more.

The job outlook for recent grads is constantly evolving. The fluctuation is frequently industry-based and can vary from position-to-position and state-to-state. However, there are some items you should always keep in mind regardless of your industry, position, or location. Below are some quick tips that could help you land that big job - whether you’re a new graduate, or attending your 30th reunion:

1. Do your homework.
Company research is a critical part of any job search and fortunately there are tons of places to start. You can start by checking out company websites and looking for business information websites that have company and industry profiles. For additional information, talk to friends and colleagues that may have information about a particular company or industry.

2. Surf the Web.
There are loads of job search websites out there. In addition to the big-name job posting sites, don’t forget to seek out online industry forums as well as the “employment” or “career” section of the websites for companies you’re most interested in. And don’t be afraid to post questions about different companies on job forums or other online question/answer interfaces.

3. Enlist the help of others.
This is an important step–fortunately there are lots of ways to do it: meet with your school’s career services expert, let your Uncle Louie know that you’re looking for a job, and network with other professionals in your industry. Don’t be afraid to also take your networking online. There are lots of business-networking sites out there–take some time to review the ones that will present you with the best opportunities for visibility and networking.

4. Reexamine your resume.
Proofread, proofread, proofread. And then, when you’re finished hand it over to a trusted friend or colleague for additional input. Long-standing advice suggests that you keep your resume to one page, or two–at the most. If you feel your age may negatively impact your chances of getting a job then leave off your year of graduation or other such information that may indicate your age.

5. Attend a career fair.
Don’t forget to check out local job & career fairs. Even if it doesn’t yield the job of your dreams, it could provide you with valuable networking opportunities and insight into companies that you might not have otherwise considered. Pick up as many business cards as possible–you never know when they may come in handy.

Do you feel that you deserve a higher salary and need to ask for a raise? Let’s look at the facts: You’re long overdue for a raise. Your boss hasn’t exactly been forthcoming with one. And sitting around waiting for him or her to give you a raise hasn’t really been of much help.
So what are you waiting for? It’s definitely time to ask for a raise. And with the following tips, you’ll be able to do just that.

1. Access How Much Others Working in Your Field are Earning: The first thing you should do before you ask for a raise is learn about typical salaries in your field. You can get this information by using salary calculator tools like Salary.com and even looking at salary surveys. If you belong to a professional association, check with it to see if it has salary information available.

2. Evaluate Your Worth: Make a list of your accomplishments, skills and contributions. Figure out how much you can earn. Salary calculators and surveys generally present you with a range of salaries. You must determine where you should fit into this range. And to do this, consider the number of years you’ve been working in the field and the length of time you’ve worked for your current employer.

3. Prepare Your Argument: You really shouldn’t approach asking your boss for a raise as an argument, but you may have to make your case. Arm yourself with information. Know what a normal raise is for someone with your experience and occupation. Think of it as selling yourself just as you would do if you were trying to get a prospective employer to hire you. That’s why it is imperative to make a list of all the things you’ve accomplished for your employer.

4. Set Up an Appointment to Talk to Your Boss: You need to show your boss how serious you are about asking for a raise. Treat this as a business meeting and set up a time to meet with your boss. The most important thing is to choose an appropriate time of day, like an end-of-business-day meeting. Also, assess his or her mood and outlook that day. Is he or she ready to consider your request?

5. Present Your Case: Your boss may agree to give you a raise immediately with you having to do nothing more than ask him or her for one. But if that doesn’t happen, you may have to do more to convince your boss you should get a raise. Present the material you gathered earlier, including the typical salaries in your field and your accomplishments. But be flexible. Would you consider a supplement in perks, time off, flextime or vacation time in lieu of a raise? The key is to negotiate.

6. Have a Backup Plan Ready: Before you walk into your boss’s office to ask for a raise, think about what you will do if he or she says no, or agrees to give you a raise that is much smaller than the one you want. Will you quit your job or will you wait a while and then ask for a raise at a later date? Your answer will solely depend on what your boss says. For example, has your boss turned you down because of your performance? If so, ask yourself if his or her criticisms are valid. If they are, think about what changes you can make. If they aren’t, then you may want to go where you are appreciated.

With these tips in mind, you will be able to ask for a raise in a jiffy and also expect immediate and favorable results.

A Gloomy Scenario

A gloomy national economy outlook will mean more companies looking toward cutting jobs and outsourcing them to maintain their bottom lines. In such a scenario, you cannot be sure who will be affected. Not only will it mean losing jobs, but also a reduction in existing salary structures.

This sets the clock ticking on how to cope with the prospect of losing a job and what to do next.

How to Cope With Downsizing

One of the ways to deal with the fear of losing your job is to confront the situation by preparing yourself for the change. Most of us prefer a settled life style with a routine.

When that routine is disturbed, we feel stressed and insecure. It is best to be prepared for what may be inevitable.

Overcoming Emotions

It is healthy to express whatever worry and anxiety you may feel. There will be feelings of hurt, pain, and sadness when it comes to a possible move or change and lack of promotion or salary increase. You will feel the same way if you are fired or denied benefits. Rather than keep them within yourself, it is best to express them to someone.

Unexpected changes affect us all. A change such as downsizing in an organization hits hard, but we must be prepared and cope effectively instead of feeling lost. It’s easy to slip into depression or to neglect your family while trying to cope with the changes that have disturbed you and your lifestyle.

Everyone will be better served if you and they face it together.

Positive Feelings

It is important to overcome the depression and be positive and upbeat in your outlook. Remind yourself that this, too, will pass. You have lost only your job, not the world or your family. Look at the brighter side of things.

Recognize Your Skills

You have probably learned a lot on your present job. Those skills belong to you and that is what will serve you in your next job. There may be a thousand opportunities waiting out there that you have not explored until now because you were secure.

Look around and explore. Maybe you could think of starting your own enterprise with the skills and knowledge you have acquired. Maybe you’d like to experiment with something new instead - and this is your chance. A new venture could be a way to apply your creativity.

Prove Yourself

Maybe you’re not one of those who will be affected negatively by downsizing. But this is still your chance to prove your worthiness to your current organization. You stand every chance of being appreciated. Show genuine interest in the problems of the organization and how you can help solve some of them.

Use your creativity. You will probably be called upon to take on some of the tasks of those that are let go. Be committed to your work. In addition to proving yourself, increase your value to the organization. Meet challenges effectively and avoid becoming complacent because you were retained while others were not.

All of us know what it’s like - dealing with that angry boss who seems to get angry too fast and too often. He or she expects tasks to be performed within unreasonable deadlines, and completely discounts the fact that you also do need quality time away from work.

You of course have the option of resorting to outright confrontation, and this could possibly lead to verbal sparring and angry outbursts. The worst case scenario is that you could end up quitting or conversely, you might be asked to leave.

Control your own Behaviour

The first thing you have to realize is that the only person whose actions you can control and direct is your own. Don’t even bother trying to change other people - they will probably only end up disliking you for it.

You can, however, direct some of the more potentially heated confrontations by adapting a non-confrontational attitude. Be clear, firm and assertive without resorting to loud or aggressive acts yourself. In most instances, this can already work to cool the heads of people involved.

Good communication

It cannot be emphasized enough the importance of clear communication. This means the ability to speak clearly without being ambiguous or leaving the potential of being misunderstood.

While it means avoiding rude, angry or emotional outbursts, it also means not resorting to the opposite but equally unhelpful means of communication. This includes sulking, unreasonable silence, and a too-obvious avoidance of your boss. Many times, the best strategy is really keeping to the middle ground.

Learning how to communicate effectively is a skill like any other. Thus, it can be learned and developed. Over time, it can help to define a better working relationship with other people.

Put yourself in his shoes

Perhaps your boss is dealing with some conflict in his own life, or is resolving some troubles of his own. Granted, this really isn’t a valid reason for him to lash out at you or anyone else who might not have anything to do with his problems. However, it does help if you understand that your boss is human too, and that he has problems of his own to deal with.

If anything, it can pave the way for a more empathetic interaction where you do not unduly discount what might actually be very important to another person. Hence, don’t bring problems to his or her attention when he is obviously wrestling with difficulties of his own. He won’t likely be inclined to be generous.

And when you do approach him, be sure that you have reasoned out your arguments well enough to be able to rationally address any objections he might raise. Not only can this prevent you from getting hostile, but it can also help him to see your value as an employee - regardless of his personal problems, and why you deserve a raise, a promotion, or the right to be heard in a matter in which you feel strongly about.

Compromise

This can mean an agreement to disagree. This can also mean that you agree not to pursue issues that can no longer be resolved. Ultimately, this means that you have to learn to be comfortable with the fact that you cannot please everybody, and that some problems cannot be resolved. This is no reason to beat yourself up over it.

When a wife and/or mother decides to seek a career, she chooses to walk a very tight rope. Success or failure in both or either will depend on how well she plans. Carrying out those plans is crucial, however, and it is never easy. Many women do succeed at both, and the following tips may help those who have set such a course for their lives.

Self-Confidence

Impeccable personal grooming and a pleasing demeanor are important components of self-confidence. If a woman is not convinced that she deserves success, she will never achieve it; and conveying her confidence in herself is essential if she is to move up the success ladder.

Self-confidence can take a woman far, especially in a difficult work environment. If a woman is confident in her own capabilities and skills, she is much more likely to promote her own accomplishments and refine her skills for a brighter future.

Hone Your Skills

Once you know what your goals are, it’s time to start working on the things that will make it possible to attain them. For example, you must determine how to continue to learn new skills and improve old ones. The ability to interact with clients and fellow-employees is valued by employers and will aid in your upward climb.

Education

The most effective advantage that any woman can have is her education. She should always take advantage of every opportunity that comes along to gain more education and to enhance already-existing knowledge by keeping up with current developments through trade publications, conferences, and professional courses.

Once you have your education in hand, don’t just sit on them - make them known to your employer. This goes double for any executive-level or graduate degrees that you may have earned.

Far too many women have stellar educational records, but keep them to themselves. The fact is that you need to make your accomplishments public. This isn’t bragging - it’s being smart and savvy about advancing your career.

Focus On Your Strengths

When it comes to your career, your focus should be on a particular area and you should concentrate on developing your skills in it. Enjoy your work, find your specialty and talents, and work on them, keeping your knowledge as the base.

The person who is unable to work to their greatest capacity is not a professional; instead, she is just an employee working for a salary. Always remember that you can never excel in a field that does not hold your interest and that you don’t have a passion for.

Enthusiasm is the foundation for all your achievements; and you will not be able to pass on your enthusiasm unless you feel it yourself.
